Memory 1: Who needs superpowers when you have grenades? (Fear Itself)

Transcript:

[Bucky's seventeen, in a weird Atlantean aircraft in the middle of a snowstorm with Steve and Namor. They're above Antarctica, and Namor's driving like a crazy dude.]

Bucky: Take it easy, Namor. You're gonna blow an engine pushin' that hard in this weather.

Namor: I know my own ship, Barnes.

Bucky: Yeah... An I know how angry you are right now. We'll find them, pal... You know we will.

Steve: Think I'm on Namor's side in this one, Bucky. That Thule priest said they brought something from beyond to help the Nazis win the war. And I'd like to find whatever that is before the Red Skull gets his hands on it...

[They fly on for a time, until they spot activity on the ice below.]

Namor: Hold on. This will not be an easy landing. Our wings have ice and —

Bucky: Namor — look out!

[A giant monster with fangs bursts up out of the ice and grabs hold of the ship, tossing it aside. The three passengers scramble out with some difficulty. Steve's got his cowl up now and Bucky's holding a machine gun.]

Namor: All right, monster... prepare to meet destruction.

Steve: Namor, wait. We need a plan, we can't just —

[Namor charges in.]

Steve: Damn it.

Bucky: Is that thing the Skull's secret weapon from beyond?

Steve: I don't know... but I'd hate to see it on the front lines. So we stop it here. Any way we can.

Bucky: Wish I had more grenades then, and — [Notices figures approaching on the ice.] Nazis at ten o'clock! [He opens fire.] I'll hold em off! You help Namor!

[Bucky fights Nazis while Steve and Namor take on the giant scary thing. When the Nazis get too close to him, he jumps three of them and takes them down hand-to-hand.]

Bucky: All right, who wants some knuckle sandwich?

[Meanwhile, Steve climbs up on the monster's shoulder and attacks from the new vantage point.]

Steve: Let's just hope this brings you down!

[The monster goes down hard — right in the line of Nazi fire.]

Steve: That's it — get in the crossfire!

[Above the fight, a plane is incoming.]

Steve: Heads up, Namor... Air support.

[Namor ignores him and goes for the monster again.]

Steve: Namor — look out!

[The plane opens fire, taking out a huge chunk of the ice. The monster, a good portion of the Nazis, and Bucky all fall into the icy water.]

Bucky: Ahh! Damn it!

Steve: Bucky! Get away from it!

Bucky: W-what —

[He turns to see the monster right by him.]

Bucky: Oh.

[The monster comes at him with its toothy mouth open. He fishes for one of the grenades on his belt and lobs it in the thing's mouth.]

Bucky: Eat a f-frag — ya b-big ape!

[He swims like hell away from the exploding monster. When he reaches shore, Steve hauls him up.]

Steve: C'mon, pal... I got you.

Bucky: F-f-fat lotta help... you two s-s-super-men w-w-were...

[Namor is more concerned with the plane that's getting away.]

Namor: Damn them! I can give chase! I can rip the Skull's craft right out of the sky!

Steve: Another day, Namor. Bucky's freezing. We need to get your ship flight-worthy as fast as we can... get him off this ice.

[Bucky is freezing. He's huddled in on himself, and Steve's got an arm around his shoulders.]

Bucky: D-don't mind me... Just the g-g-guy who killed the g-g-giant m-monster...

Steve: C'mon... there are blankets in the ship. We'll have other chances to capture the Skull. At least we stopped his master plan.

[Namor lingers, looking at the sky, while Steve leads Bucky back toward the downed Atlantean aircraft.]

What Bucky gets from this:

-Names! Namor calls him Barnes; Steve calls him Bucky. He has no idea which is right at this point.
-Combat! He picked up some hand-to-hand skills from this one. It's early canon, so the insane Soviet assassin level of skill isn't here yet, but he's trained with the SAS and been in the war a bit over a year, so he's no slouch.
-Weapons! Guns and grenades are A+.
-Aircraft! They fly and have engines. Engines can be blown out if you push them too hard.
-Weather happens. Also, the cold sucks.
-There are Nazis, who want to kill him. The feeling is mutual. Possibly they are related to the Red Skull, who enjoys summoning things from beyond.
-Steve mentioned front lines. Maybe a war is going on?
-Monsters are a thing. They come from beyond.
-Namor's something else when he's pissed off. ...also, possibly not human? Who wanders around in a speedo in weather that cold?
-Steve is a pretty great guy.
-He didn't always have the arm. Or powers.
-No, really. The cold sucks.

Effects:

-Speech patterns: Early-canon Bucky is a lot more casual. +10 gonna, wanna, lemme, gotta. -ing verbs are now sometimes in'. Them is em more often. He'll be slangier until he gets back other memories. Plus... terrible insults. Oh, Bucky.

-Strategy: Kind of a mixed bag? He knows there are things that he can't handle and recognizes that, say, jumping the giant monster when there are people better equipped to take it out is probably a bad call. On the other hand, he totally took out the monster anyway when push came to shove. It's one of his few memories where he is not the one charging in blind, and he gets to see what happens when someone else does, which might help his tendency to fly off the handle in the short term.

-Interpersonal: Probably one of the best he could have gotten as a starting point, all things considered. There are people he knows and cares about; he's got their backs, and they've got his. It reinforces his natural tendency to put himself in danger for people he likes, as that was expected almost as a matter of course here. It's also one of the (very) few memories where he lets someone take care of him and doesn't immediately come back with "I'm fine," and try to prove it. So, at least in the short term, he might be better about owning up if something's the matter and/or letting someone help.

-Issues: Miraculously, this memory hit none of Bucky's big issues. Again, probably one of the better ones he could have gotten, all things considered. A+ for war buddies supporting each other. Also, he pulled his own weight despite being incredibly outclassed, so he'll be coming out of this memory with his confidence intact.
